The Japanese company Kansai Electric Power (Kansai EPCO) has agreed with the German RWE Renewables (RWE) to build floating wind farms on the coast of Japan.
«There is great potential for floating wind farms around the world – especially in deep coastal countries such as Japan,» said RWE Renewables chief operating officer Sven Uttermöhlen.
According to Kansai EPCO Executive Vice President Nozomi Mori, the project will help the corporation move closer to its main goal – a complete phase-out of hydrocarbon generation by 2050.
Floating wind power plants differ favorably from stationary ones in their ability to be located even in deep sea areas. Even though their implementation is quite complex, and the electricity they generate – including installation and transmission – is more expensive than stationary offshore wind turbines, such projects have recently become increasingly popular.
