The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) has requested that school systems immediately share the following information and the communications below with parents and families.
Medicaid and CHIP coverage continued during the COVID-19 public health emergency through a federal law preventing anyone from losing those benefits. Based on federal law, continuous Medicaid coverage ended on March 31, 2023, so recipients need to renew their benefits when it is time to ensure their coverage will continue if they are eligible. Students may qualify for CHIP benefits even if adults in their family are not eligible for Medicaid.
To inform families of these changes, please use the optional “Letter to Families Regarding Medicaid Renewals” and “HHSC School Outreach Toolkit” in the HHSC Medicaid Information for Families section of TEA’s Superintendent Support: Student & Staff Health Resources webpage:/texas-educators/superintendents/student-staff-health-resources.
Additional optional communication assets are included on this webpage to support school systems.
