On May 27, 2022, the Ë¿¹ÏÊÓƵ (TEA) requested the US Department of Education (USDE) extend the duration of a subgrant to a local educational agency (LEA) under Title I, Part A, Section 1003(c) from four to five years. Under Title I, Part A, Section 1003(c) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), a state education agency (SEA) may award Title I, Part A, Section 1003(c) funds to an LEA to support an identified school for up to four years. However, due to the impacts of COVID-19 some Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI), Targeted Support and Improvement (TSI), and Additional Targeted Support Identification (ATSI) schools currently in their fourth year of the subgrant period need additional time to implement school improvement interventions.ÌýÌý

Under the granted waiver, TEA may grant LEAs receiving Title I, Part A, Section 1003(c) School Improvement Grant funds an additional year to implement school improvement interventions, revise budgets, and assess implementation, as appropriate due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. This additional time will allow LEAs to continue implementing interventions aimed at improving academic achievement and school performance.Ìý

On June 30, 2022, this waiver was approved by the USDE. The approved waiver allows TEA to extend, for a fifth year, a subgrant to LEAs to implement school improvement interventions for schools previously identified for improvement under ESEA. TEA demonstrated that the requested waiver will advance student academic achievement in those schools receiving Title I, Part A, Section 1003(c) funds. As ESEA permits an SEA to award this funding for no more than four years without a waiver, TEA cannot award further Title I, Part A, Section 1003(c) funds to these schools for school year 2023–24 without requesting and receiving an additional waiver.ÌýÌý
